Reading the old man and the sea About the author Ernest Hemingway, one ofthe greatest American writers in 20th century, is the representative of “l(fā)ostgeneration” writer. He was born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois. workedas a reporter after graduating from high school in 1917.,amd served as anambulance driver in the Italian infantry and was wounded just before his 19thbirthday. Hospitalized, Hemingway fell in love with an older nurse.

In 1954, Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. In his life,Hemingway married four times and wrote numerous essays, short stories andnovels. The effects of Hemingway's lifelong depressions, illnesses and accidentscaught up with him. In July 1961, he committed suicide in Ketchum, Idaho.

About the book The old man and the sea is one of Hemingway’s most enduringworks. Told in language of great simplicity and power , it is the story of anold Cuban fisherman ,down on his luck ,and his supreme ordeal ---a relentless ,agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream . Here Hemingwayrecasts , in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in theface of defeat , of personal triumph won from loss . Written in 1952 ,thishugely successfully novella confirmed his power and presence in the literaryworld and played a huge part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature.

About the old man Santiago is described as a failure by other fishermen inthe village for catching no fish for a long time . However, he should beregarded as a hero all his life , when he had played the hand game with thegreat Negro from Cienfuegos who was the strongest man on the docks ;when hefight with that large marlin ; when he struggle with the sharks . You can findhis optimism, confidence, wisdom, perseverance and bravery anywhere . I admirehim not only because these but also his regarding these as the things he had todo , the rules he had to obey . Such a man is really a man , a marvelous man .All the characters of him is worth being learned not only in Hemingway’s times, but for ever ; not only for a certain kind of man , but for all of us .Let’salways remember his word “But man is not made for defeat,” he said. “A man canbe destroyed but not defeated.”

I like to read books when I am free. I like to read all kinds of books. Ithink reading is a good habit as well as a nice hobby . I understand a lot ofthings which I can't learn in class. Reading opens my mind and heart, readinggives me wisdom and teaches me a lot of valuable lessons, too. I think we shouldmake friends with books and we can learn a lot from them! If you don't likereading, you will be out of the fashsion.Nobody likes to make friends with aperson who has no knowledge.

if we have a book ,we will not be felling of being longly

When I'm free or in trouble,I always take out a book and read quietly. In notime,I've put my heart into it so that I'll forget all the troubles. It's in thisway that I've formed the habit of reading in any time.

Little boys as I was,I was interest in picture books and storybooks.I wasstruck by them.No sooner had I entered the middle school than I began to readnovel, plays, essays and so on.I found I could get much from them.Little by littleI took great interest in literature and last term I won the first prize in thecomposition contest among middle-school students in Zhe Jiang.

Reading “The Emperor's New Clothes”,I had to let out a burst of laughterover his fool.“The Little Match Girl” couldn't keep me from crying for hermisery.“ Robinson Crusoe” took me into a strange world full of danger. And I wasalso deeply impressed by Helen Keller's patience and perseverance… Besidesthese, books also tell me other thing -how to be a man and how to tell thedifference between right and wrong. In a word, good books can make me know what Ididn't before. So I think of a good book as my best friend.

I'll never forget this famous saying,“ Good books are best friends whonever turn their backs upon us.”

In the Chinese book, there is a text mainly teach us how to choose thebook, the teacher let us read this text, after I read, I have a littleunderstand the meaning of it, and then wait for the teacher to talk about, and Imore understand, this is mainly about reading more books, can make us moreknowledge.

I remember the teacher said, read more books can be happy life, so I haveto try, for a week to read a book, I read the time, my mother said, "you are sogood, sitting here to read seriously" "I was good, not now". Mother said, "thisis good, reading is to read, not to the teachers and parents to see".

I now finally understand the benefits and benefits of reading books, reading the benefits are: 1, 2, rich knowledge, can be happy life. I thinkreading has become more fun, because reading the original is the rich, that it'sgood to read, can kill two birds with one stone, can be a wealth of knowledgeand a happy life.

So I read more books will be for us a lot of help, so I here remind youthat read mainly we don't pretend to understand.
