推薦信的含義
在申請(qǐng)研究生課程時(shí),絕大部分學(xué)校都要求申請(qǐng)人提交2-3份推薦信,通常稱(chēng)為Recommendation Letter或Reference(多見(jiàn)于英國(guó))。錄取委員會(huì)除了注重申請(qǐng)人呈現(xiàn)出的主觀上的自己,還想借著推薦者的文字描述了解申請(qǐng)人客觀的背景狀況。因此,推薦信可以提供一種非量化、公式化的評(píng)估素材。
推薦信的內(nèi)容
推薦信的核心內(nèi)容是評(píng)估申請(qǐng)者的特質(zhì),以及將來(lái)在某個(gè)特定專(zhuān)業(yè)領(lǐng)域發(fā)展的潛力。有些學(xué)校會(huì)提供推薦信表格讓推薦人逐一填寫(xiě)并回答問(wèn)題。如:

首先,避免親屬或家庭成員。學(xué)校一般都明確規(guī)定不能由這類(lèi)人來(lái)寫(xiě)推薦信。原因是他們往往很難客觀反映事實(shí)。在家族企業(yè)里工作的申請(qǐng)者,如果一定要請(qǐng)親屬推薦,在寫(xiě)推薦信的時(shí)候一定不要表明你們的血緣關(guān)系。
其次,推薦人的職位并不是越高越有利。有些人會(huì)困惑于究竟是找班主任還是校長(zhǎng)、部門(mén)主管抑或公司總經(jīng)理。應(yīng)該說(shuō),一個(gè)身處高位但是和申請(qǐng)人并不熟悉的人寫(xiě)出的一封用在誰(shuí)身上都合適的推薦信是達(dá)不到任何效果的。只有了解申請(qǐng)者及其成長(zhǎng)過(guò)程、有過(guò)共事經(jīng)歷的人才能針對(duì)申請(qǐng)者的優(yōu)缺點(diǎn)進(jìn)行深入分析,并輔以具體的事例,提供有深度的推薦。

然而,由于客觀情況(推薦人英語(yǔ)水平、辦事風(fēng)格等)的影響,現(xiàn)在的留學(xué)申請(qǐng)當(dāng)中,有很大一部分推薦信其實(shí)是出自于申請(qǐng)者自己之手,推薦人通常只是通覽全篇之后負(fù)責(zé)簽字落款。那么,申請(qǐng)者要如何寫(xiě)出“看起來(lái)真實(shí)”的推薦信呢?
首先,要遵守邏輯關(guān)系。不要提及正常情況下推薦人不可能知道的事情。例如,專(zhuān)業(yè)課老師往往不熟悉你的課外活動(dòng)表現(xiàn),班主任通常不會(huì)知道你是否熬夜寫(xiě)論文泡圖書(shū)館,一個(gè)老師不適合評(píng)論申請(qǐng)者在其它課堂上的表現(xiàn)。若情況特殊,一定要交代清楚。
其次,要以“例”服人。如果一封推薦信只是泛泛而談流于形式,堆砌了溢美之詞卻沒(méi)有具體例子來(lái)支撐這些觀點(diǎn),這樣的推薦信不僅不能使錄取委員會(huì)增加對(duì)申請(qǐng)者的了解,反而會(huì)讓他們懷疑推薦人是否有所保留。
第三,可以適當(dāng)提及自己的“缺點(diǎn)”。按理說(shuō)推薦信應(yīng)該主要闡述優(yōu)點(diǎn),但如果只是一味吹捧,不免有粉飾之嫌。如果能恰當(dāng)?shù)丶尤胍恍?ldquo;缺點(diǎn)”,不僅能令推薦信顯得更真實(shí),還能突出被推薦人的個(gè)人特質(zhì)。例如,“較難平衡學(xué)習(xí)和生活”可以間接體現(xiàn)出“廢寢忘食的態(tài)度”,“有時(shí)吹毛求疵”其實(shí)是在反映“做事認(rèn)真細(xì)致”。
最后,要全面了解和區(qū)分推薦人。包括推薦人的年齡、性格、職務(wù)、主要學(xué)術(shù)研究方向等。由此來(lái)設(shè)定不同推薦信的語(yǔ)言風(fēng)格、字體排版,甚至紙張、信封等細(xì)節(jié)。
