I think the most terrible thing in life for my little brother is getting up in the morning. He is almost sick when my mother calls, "Herbert! Its seven oclock! Get up!"

Herbert answers, "Im coming!" and goes right back to sleep. Im not at all like my brother. I dont like to go to bed at night but I dont mind getting up in the morning. I usually wake up before my mother calls me. I jump out of bed and go into the bathroom to take a shower. I get dressed, brush my teeth, comb my hair, and get ready to go downstairs for breakfast as soon as my mother calls.

But not Herbert. He just sleeps. A military band (軍樂隊(duì)) in our bedroom could not wake him up. I call him and say, "Get up! Mum will be up here to pull you out of bed if you dont get up immediately!"

But he just sleeps. After calling a few more times my mother has to come upstairs and pull Herbert out of bed. Its that way every day with my little brother. Perhaps some day hell learn to get up on time, but I really dont think so.

  True or False

A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子) or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other peoples rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way.

Now the very same thing is true to literature(文學(xué)). And the question, "How shall I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有經(jīng)驗(yàn)的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you will never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning.

  1. A friend of the writers drew the horses ____.

  A. very well

  B. in the way of western rule

  C. in the way of his own rule

  D. all of the above

  2. The writer was surprised because ____.

  A. the artist began to draw at the head of the horse

  B. the artist began to draw at the tail of the horse

  C. the artist made his own rule

  D. the artist did not follow other peoples rule

  3. You are not yet experienced because ____.

  A. you dont know where to begin

  B. you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail

  C. you always asked question

  D. you do not trust to your own powers

  4. When you become more experienced you will ____.

  A. never ask question

  B. often begin at the tail

  C. should write the end of the story

  D. should think of the beginning

  5. The topic of the passage is ______.

  A. How to draw a horse

  B. How to write a story

  C. How to make your own rules

  D. Trust to your own powers

As many as 10 of the 17 kinds of penguins(企鵝)may be in danger of disappearing. The number of penguins have decreased(減少) by 30% since 1987.

Penguins are black and white birds that live in the southern part of the world. They are common in South America,New Zealand,Australia and South Africa. Mary live near cold waters. But some live near warm waters in Galapagos Islands. Penguins cannot fly,but they are fine swimmers. Penguins eat fish and krill(磷蝦).

The warming of the earth is the decrease in penguin populations. The heating of the air has caused ocean waters to become warmer. Higher water temperatures have reduced the supply of fish and krill. Some years later these birds are completely unable to reproduce(繁殖). Besides, many adult penguins die of hunger.

Widespread(廣泛的) fishing, exploration for oil and oil leaks(漏) also make penguins be in danger. Poisonous organisms(生物) in ocean water are another danger. Penguins also have their enemies, including wild dogs, sharks, seals and sea lions.

News about penguins is not all bad, however. Several years ago,oil leaking from a ship hurt 40% of the penguins in South Africa. The penguins became covered with oil. But thousands of people helped clean and treat the birds well. Then they returned the penguins to the wild. Now these South African penguins are reproducing in higher numbers than before the oil leaking.

  1. Penguins ___________.

  A. can swim better than fly

  B. can be found near Oceania (大洋洲)

  C. eat fish only

  D. live only in cold waters.

  2. Which of the following is NOT the cause of penguins decrease in numbers?

  A. Oil searching. B. Widespread fishing.

  C. Humans killing. D. Warming of the oceans.

  3. Why are the penguins in South Africa reproducing in higher numbers than before the oil leaking?

  A. Because people removed the ship.

  B. Because people sent a lot of penguins to the wild.

  C. Because people helped the penguins.

  D. Because people treated the penguins well.

Have you ever been ill? When you are ill,you must be unhappy because your body becomes hot,and there are pains all over your body. You dont want to work, you stay in bed, feeling very sad.

What makes us ill? It is germs(細(xì)菌). Germs are everywhere. They are very small and you cant find them with your eyes, but you can see them with a microscope. They are very small and there could be hundreds of them on a very small thing.

Germs are always found in dirty water. When we look at dirty water under the microscope,we shall see them in it. So your father and mother will not let you drink dirty water.

Germs arent found only in water. They are found in air and dust. A,B選項(xiàng)明顯不符合題意,只有選D,并且根據(jù)第二段It is germs(細(xì)菌). Germs are everywhere.

They are very small and you cant find them with your eyes, but you can see them with a microscope. 確定選A。

Germs are always found in dirty water.

A, Germs may make us ill。

A man named Fu Xian was fond of reading books. Though proficient1 in literature and etiquette2, he was stubbornly adherent3 to outworn rules. Being impractical4 and dull, he looked just like an old pedant5.

One day, Fu Xian strolled on the street with measured strides and asked whomever he met: "Have you seen Wei San?"

Someone pointed6 to the direction and he walked on unhurriedly with measured strides. When he saw Wei San, he panted for a while, then said: "I just saw your wife doing needlework under a tree. She was tired and taking a nap. Your child was playing beside a well, only 3 to 5 chi away from it. It seemed to me that some accident might happen. As there is prudent7 reserve between men and women, it was not convenient for me to awaken8 your wife in person. Thats why I have come all the way here to tell you."

Upon hearing this, Wei San was panic-stricken and hurried home. When he got home, his wife was bending over the well, wailing9 bitterly for their son.

After a long cold winter when I have rarely been out on my bike, the weather has finally turned warmer and even sunny occasionally. Yesterday I had a surprise call from Tom suggesting we turn out for a short ride. This being my intention anyway I gladly agreed and we met up at Jiedaokou Station at about ten o’clock.

As Tom has a permanent Sunday Lunch appointment at 12-30pm we opted to make a round trip to Hannan . The weather was cloudy but dry and as we were both a bit out of condition after a long winter lay off we took the easy option of taking the train to Shiyan to get us on top of the ridge with an easy start for the trip.

A long coast down to Jiangtan and straight on to Mount End saw us climbing up to Zhongshan Park. The climb got stiffer but still Tom kept on riding. Gritting my teeth I followed on and crested the hill, Then the usual Essex switchback with an enforced short walk for both of us part way along saw us at Tawny common. Round the common we went, to the Mole Trap, an erstwhile rough old country pub now tarted up for the motorists. I don’t go in there any more, so we sat on the adjacent public seat for a while and a short natter.

Time enough to break away, Tom to his lunch appointment, me for home by way of theYellow Crane Tower and Changjiang Bridge. See you in a while, crocodile! I arrived home about 2 o’clock. Just in time for my own Sunday lunch .
