混跡職場(chǎng),10句必不可少的商務(wù)英語(yǔ)
1You can count on me!你可以指望我!
This means “You can depend on me” – I can be trusted to be responsible and get the work done, or do what I say I will do.
這句話的意思是“你可以依靠我”——我是一個(gè)值得信賴且負(fù)責(zé)任的人,會(huì)很好地完成任務(wù),做好我承諾過(guò)的事情。
Note that in English we say count on and depend on – don’t use the prepositions in, of, or with in these expressions.
需要注意的是,在英語(yǔ)里我們說(shuō)“count on”和“depend on”——這個(gè)搭配不能用其他的介詞,比如in、of或者with。
2The deal fell through.交易沒(méi)法繼續(xù)了。
To fall through means that a plan will not go forward. Something happened to make it fail, or make it impossible to proceed. We often talk about plans, partnerships, or deals falling through.
Fall through的`意思是某項(xiàng)計(jì)劃不會(huì)再有進(jìn)展。因?yàn)槟承┰驅(qū)е掠?jì)劃失敗,或者無(wú)法繼續(xù)推進(jìn)。常用的搭配有plans(計(jì)劃)、partnership(合作關(guān)系)或者deals(交易)+falling through(失敗)。
3Can you fill me in on what happened? 你能詳細(xì)告訴我發(fā)生了什么嗎?
To fill someone in on something means to tell that person the details about that topic.
Fill someone in on something的意思是告訴某人某件事情的細(xì)節(jié)。
This phrasal verb is different from fill in for someone, which means to substitute that person; take their place temporarily. For example, if your colleague is sick, you might fill in for her at a meeting.
這個(gè)動(dòng)詞短語(yǔ)和fill in for someone的意思不同,后者的意思是替換掉某人;暫時(shí)取代他的位置。例如:如果你的同事病了,你可能會(huì)代替她(fill in for her)參加會(huì)議。
4I’ll talk to the director and sound her out. 我會(huì)和主管談?wù),看看她怎么說(shuō)。
To sound someone out means to find out the person’s opinion about something, or reaction to it. Sound out often implies that you try to discover their opinion carefully, perhaps by bringing up the topic in an indirect way and seeing what they say instead of asking directly.
Sound someone out的意思是弄清某人關(guān)于某事的意見(jiàn)或者對(duì)于某事的反應(yīng)。Sound out通常包含的意思是:你謹(jǐn)慎地通過(guò)試探來(lái)搞清他們的觀點(diǎn),也許是間接地提起某個(gè)話題,然后看看他們會(huì)說(shuō)什么,而不是開(kāi)門(mén)見(jiàn)山地直接詢問(wèn)。
5Please hold off on starting the project until it’s approved. 請(qǐng)等待批準(zhǔn)后再開(kāi)始項(xiàng)目.
To hold off on doing something means to delay, to wait. This phrasal verb is often used with “until” later in the sentence, to show that you need to wait to do the activity until something else happens.
Hold off on doing something的意思是“拖延,等待”。這個(gè)動(dòng)詞短語(yǔ)后面常常會(huì)和until搭配使用,意指你得等到另一件事發(fā)生,才能去做某件事。
6I’m not sure where that file is, but I’ll try and track it down for you. 我不太清楚那個(gè)文件在哪,不過(guò)我可以試著幫你找到。
To track something down means to search for it and find out where that thing is. We can also use it for people – track someone down – when you look for the person to discover where he/she is.
Track something down的意思是尋找某個(gè)東西并找到它在哪。這個(gè)短語(yǔ)也可以對(duì)人使用,當(dāng)你想找到某人在哪時(shí)就可以說(shuō)“track someone down”。
7We’re going to team up with a non-profit organization. 我們將要和一家NGO合作。
To team up means to join together, work together.
Team up的意思是一同工作,協(xié)力合作。
8The meeting was called off. 會(huì)議被取消了。
This simply means the meeting was canceled.
Call off的意思很簡(jiǎn)單,就是取消。
9Let’s not rule out that option. 我們別排除那個(gè)選項(xiàng)了。
To rule something out means to eliminate something from consideration. So this phrase is saying that we shouldn’t stop considering that option; we should keep that option inside the range of possibilities.
Rule something out的意思是不再考慮某件事。因此這個(gè)短語(yǔ)是在說(shuō)我們不應(yīng)該停止考慮那個(gè)選項(xiàng),我們應(yīng)該把它保留在可能性范圍內(nèi)。
10Tim is heading up the new initiative. Tim是新項(xiàng)目的負(fù)責(zé)人。
This is an informal way to say that Tim is the leader, the person in charge, of the new initiative (project).
這句話是一種非正式表達(dá),意思是說(shuō):Tim是一個(gè)新項(xiàng)目的領(lǐng)導(dǎo),即管事的人。
Don’t get head up confused with heads up. To “give someone a heads up” means to give them an alert or warning in advance of a possible problem.
別把head up和heads up搞混了。“give someone a heads up”的意思是提前給某人一些提醒和警告,以避免可能發(fā)生的問(wèn)題。
